Kerto® LVL: a new factory for Metsä Wood
Our partner Metsa Wood is responding to the growing demand for low-carbon wood materials by building a new plant in Äänekoski, Finland. Thanks to this major investment of €300 million, Metsa Wood is increasing its Kerto® LVL production capacity by 160,000 m³.3 per year and affirms its decisive role for the future of timber construction in Europe.
A project taking shape
Based on two production lines, the new Kerto® LVL plant in Äänekoski is about to reach a crucial milestone. Testing of the first production line is beginning, while installation of the second line continues.
A strong signal for low-carbon construction
In a particularly challenging market environment, Metsä Wood is sending a strong signal with this project. Recent years have been marked by a certain reluctance within the European construction sector, particularly in the residential sector. This slowdown has also affected timber construction. Nevertheless, the market outlook is very promising in the medium term for Kerto® LVL and other engineered wood products, as explained to us by... Ulla Kivistö, Kerto® LVL Vice President Sales Central Europe:
“The popularity of timber construction is rising worldwide. In addition, the strengthening of European regulations, which are favorable to timber construction, is stimulating demand.”
An innovation site equipped with a research and development laboratory
Metsä Wood's LVL plants operate 24/24. The market is booming, and increased production capacity in Äänekoski is essential. Therefore, a new research and development laboratory dedicated to veneered wood products is under construction on the site, adjacent to the new plant. Metsä Wood is thus making a targeted investment in the development of Kerto® LVL and other innovative wood-based materials.
Kerto® LVL in France with ISB
Representing an investment of approximately 300 million euros, this new factory, built on a total area of 50,000 m² and with a production area of 45,000 m², constitutes one of Metsä Wood's most important investments, which will naturally benefit the French market and low carbon projects thanks to ISB's expertise.
The increase in production capacity of Metsä Wood in 2026 supports ISB's strategy to establish Kerto® and high-performance, resource-efficient and decarbonized construction systems for projects.
